Cambodians Somberly Mark Independence Day

PHNOM PENH - Hundreds of people gathered at Independence Monument in Phnom Penh on Friday to celebrate the 59th anniversary of Cambodia’s independence from France.

King Norodom Sihamoni, still in mourning at the death of his father, Norodom Sihanouk, did not attend the ceremony. Sihanouk is widely credited with bringing Cambodia through its independence without violence. He died in Beijing Oct. 15, and his body is now lying in state at the Royal Palace.

The death of the former king, widely revered in the country, cast a somber mood on the celebration.

The ceremony was presided over by National Assembly President Heng Samrin, at Independence Monument in the capital. Prime Minister Hun Sen did not attend the ceremony, which included the lighting of a “victory flame” at the base of the monument that will burn for the next three days.

Marn Dollar, a 22-year-old student of agriculture, said the ceremony was a day of sadness for him, due to the death of Sihanouk.

“I told my children to remember the king father and what he has done for the nation,” said Ket Phana, a 54-year-old civil servant from the Ministry of Rural Development, who joined the anniversary celebrations.

So anyways, wheres the fireworks!!!!!!!!!!

Gecko Cafe In Battambang

(Updated) The Gecko has moved to street #1 and is now called The Kitchen.   Food Gecko Cafe is located on the corner of Street 3 and 119. The place sits atop Gecko Moto's. I visit this place lot's of times during my stay in Battambang and when it comes to wanting a little western taste, this is one of my favorite spots. They serve good western food including burgers, pizza, salads and more. They also have Mexican food ranging from tacos to burritos and more. The Taco salad I had last was great and reminded me of home a little. Also, being in Cambodia, you can't forget about the Khmer dishes. I haven't tried alot of Khmer food here but I can say that the fried rice was good. They also serve some alcohol drinks. Besides being a little pricey for the locals, the money you pay for food here is well worth it. So enjoy! Service Ano...

The White Rose in Battambang

The White Rose is Khmer owned and is located on the corner of St 121 and Road 2.5. This place serves good Khmer dishes for reasonable prices and some western foods. They also serve some of the best shakes in town. This place has a balcony, patio area which visitors can sit and watch the streets below where vendors sell their wares to those walking the streets. The White Rose also has a nice desert menu and ice cream that reminds me of home. This place also offers free Wi-Fi. Cleanness When the day starts of here, the place is set nice, with your typical glass, silver ware wrapped in cloth and set up nicely on the tables. I guess when this place gets real busy, the place starts looking neglected due to short of workers and the many things that are going on. To me, I think the place is under staffed and would probably run better if they were up to pace with workers. But besides that, everything else is typical Cambodia so if you don't mind that, then everything s...
