Phsar Thmey In Battambang

Phsar Thmey is one of the many supermarkets located in Battambang Cambodia. This like all the other markets are center shopping centers selling anything from fresh fish, meats, and vegetables. The best time to shop for your food is in the morning when everything seems fresh. Now for some that have never been to a country like Cambodia and think that this place is going to be some nice clean super market might be intimidated to know that it's not that at all. The markets here are a little unsanitary and the fish and meat are just layed out on tables or even on the ground. There is no freezers or packaged meat. If you are a small size person, then finding clothes that fit is not a problem for you here. Unfortunately for me since I'm a little bigger, clothes are a task to find if not impossible. Hopefully one day, I will be able to find a place where I can shop for clothes at ease. Also in these markets, there are plenty of money changers and gold booths for those that want

Ponderous Moments In Battambang

I have been here going on a little over a year now and some things here in Cambodia still irks me of how some locals can act. For example, today I went to have a bite to eat at a friends food booth in Phar Thmey. I mean I am pretty use to the stares I get when wondering around Battambang, but I haven't really gotten use to the fact that some that are looking are paying a little to close attention to me which make me at times feel really uncomfortable. Well to make a long story short, after I had my meal, I asked the girl who I consider family because her parents helped me get to know Cambodia when I first arrived, give me ride to my house because I didn't want to walk. So since me being a guy, it would only be right for me to dub her and on the way back, she could ride back there alone. So as I'm driving off,  all the moto dubbs and some folks there starting hollering and whistling  at me and I had to ask the girl I was with what they were hollering about. She told me that

Phnom Sampov

Phnom Sampoue is a natural resort located along the National Road No 57 at Sam Pouy Commune, approximately 12- kilometers  from the province town of Battambang. On top of this mountain are three temple sites and 3 natural water wells, namely Pkar Slar, Lo Khoun, Ak So Pheak. Also, next to Sam Pouy mountain, there are other main mountains sites like Phnom Trung Moan, Phnom Trung Tea, Phnom Neang Rum Say Sork. These mountains are related to the folk legend of Reach Kol Neang Run Say Sork. I have been to this place once and it is a nice place to visit. What I really liked was the little monkeys that don't seem to be afraid of those passing by.

Police Blotters

Doin’ it for themselves: sisters thwart bike theft Two sisters showed they had more moxie than the moto mugs who attempted to rob them on Thursday. Three thieves moved in on the sisters as the elder one, 24, drove her 10-year-old sibling to a local market in the Memot district, Kampong Cham. The trio of trouble stepped in and blocked their way, before trying to forcibly part the siblings from their moto. The sisters yelled for help and a bystander came to the rescue. A complaint to the police resulted in the crooks being nabbed some hours later. Koh Santepheap Pooch poachers popped by Battambang cops A trio of suspected dog-knappers was finally leashed on Sunday, after a spate of missing canine complaints from Battambang villagers. Police said the pooch poachers, aged 18, 19 and 28, used string to abduct their furry victims and a machete on their owners, if they dared give chase. The misappropriated mutts were then sold and the money split. Villagers believe the stolen an

Bamboo train In Battambang

Are you looking for an adrenaline rush? If you are, then you might want to take your chances on Battambang's famous train ride. Basically, its story is this: it’s a train made out of bamboo. Why? So that it’s ultra-light. Which means that when the bigger, faster & more expensive trains come barreling down the train tracks, the bamboo train can be disassembled and put to the side (with enough time to avoid a collision). It’s a cheap and relatively easy way for locals to get around and locally transport their goods. The train is still used to transport locals with their wares from one point to the other but for a cheap price, you can get on and experience this for your self's. So for those who are visiting, catching this train is a must.  It's exciting and you will probably never get another chance if you don't soon since Cambodia is now working on the main rail system which will bring an end to most funnest roller coaster train ride in Battambang

[Battambang-Connect] BTB Movie Night Thursday - "Jiro Dreams of Sushi"

This week at the Hubb...Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011) Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a 2011 Japanese documentary film directed by David Gelb. The film follows Jiro Ono, an 85 year-old sushi master and owner of Michelin 3-Star restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro, on his continuing quest to perfect the art of sushi. Beautiful, thoughtful, and engrossing, Jiro Dreams of Sushi proves satisfying even for filmgoers who don't care for the cuisine.  Often quoted as the best documentary of 2011. - Kampot Ecran Japanese/English with English subtitles 83 minutes in HD this week! At the Hubb Restaurant in the Stung Sangke Hotel, National Road 5. Movie will start at 7:30 pm - join us earlier for food and conversation! **Next week, November 8th - "The Machinist"** Posted by  Jennifer Liebschutz

Battambang is a charming city, too often overlooked by tourists hurrying between the temples of Siem Reap and the bright lights of Bangkok and Phnom Penh. Now, at Here Be Dragons, there's a place for them to kick back, drink and swap stories, or just sink into a hammock and relax. Here Be Dragons bar is open till late, plays good music, and serves cheap beer and a variety of colourful cocktails - from classics like margaritas and mojitos to more surprising inventions, like the dramatic table-slamming 'dragon drop'. The food menu includes breakfasts, sandwiches and some great Khmer and Thai dishes at prices to suit every budget, and will soon be extended to include a full range of backpacker Western favourites. There's also a big garden with comfy seats and lots of flowers, where travellers can chill out with friends or a laptop at any time of the day. Our $2 a night dorm room will be ready in early November, and by the end of the month we should have all

Circus In Battambang

The Circus is a short ride from town heading along route#5 towards Sisophon Those new to Battmbang might want to check out the Battambang Circus. I was able to pay them a visit last night and got to check out some cool things.  Of course, it wouldn't be called a circus with out the rides and this place seems to have quite a few. They also have pool tables where you and friends can enjoy a game of pool. Roller Blading was present but there, they call it skiing.  They have a mini zoo so you can check out the little cute bunnies and stuff. They have a snake and a couple of the largest fish I have seen in Cambodia. They also have a place that they rent out for events and parties. I didn't see the restaurant that they mentioned and maybe because it was getting a little late but I hope to go back and explore more soon. Overall, this place seems like a really nice place to spend some time. With Battambang at times being a quiet place, besides the ea

Phnom Banan

Just over 20km to the south of Battambang, Phnom Banan is the best kept of the remaining Khmer ruins in the area, though again, when compared to Angkor Wat it isn't so impressive. Dating back to the 11th century, Phnom Banan has been heavily looted but remains mostly upright. What is impressive from here are the superb views of the surrounds in all directions. A large field gun kept at the site once has now been removed. It's a rather steep climb from ground level up to the ruins. Luckily at the top a few industrious drink sellers emerge, who will also be happy to show you around the temple and then the caves below on the left (when looking at the ruins from the stairs). These are well worth exploring, though note the cave entrance is almost at the base of the hill, so be sure you are finished with the ruins before you agree to go down. Also note if it is a slow day — very common here — all the children here will offer to come with you, but they will all exp

Battambang Museum Angkorian spendours

Can't get enough of Cambodia's ancient relics? Battambang museum offers an excellent display of sculptures and sandstone carvings, mostly items that have been removed from Cambodia's various temples. The pieces seem to be arranged in no particular order with little regard to age or temple origin. With its great central location, cheap admission fee of $1 and magnificent Angkorian works of art, it's definitely a great place to spend an hour or two (if it's open). The friendly staff cannot speak English, though each relic has a sign denoting century and origin. No photos permitted inside the museum. More details River road, centre of town Opening Hours: Daily 08:00-11:00 and 14:00-17:00

Here Be Dragon's BBQ

Last night at Here Be Dragon's, I was able to sit back with some friends and enjoy good food, beer, and free Vodka shots. It was nice to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones in the process. Everyone seemed real nice and striking up a little conversation with strangers didn't take any effort at all. So I just want to say that it was my pleasure meeting you guys and ladies there. Hopefully we see each other around Battambang and share another conversation or two. The BBQ was great! The only thing missing was the A1 steak sauce and I happened to mention that to Jen. (Hopefully  I spelled her name right) She said she would definably pick some up when she can and I hope that's true because I wouldn't mind having another steak right now. The staff seem all friendly and that's what you want in this type of setting. Comfortable seating's inside and out depending on you and a place I would definably visit more times in the future.
