Police Blotter: 31 Dec 2012

Mechanic in a fix after his motorbike is stolen A young mechanic in Phnom Penh may have known how to fix motorbikes, but he couldn’t prevent being tricked out of his own. Police arrested a 25-year-old man on Thursday for “borrowing” the mechanic’s bike, supposedly to buy medicine for his sick daughter, and never returning it. Two weeks after last seeing his bike, the mechanic filed a complaint with police, who soon spotted the borrower. The suspect said he sold the bike and spent all the money. He was sent to court. Nokorwat Mob goes after robber caught amid thievery A burglar in a house in Kampong Chhnang town on Thursday had not turned up anything exciting when the house’s owners themselves turned up and set a mob on him. The family of farmers had been out at work and returned to see the thief poking around. A host of villagers heeded the family’s shouts, rushed into the house and injured the suspect before handing him over to police. Koh Santepheap Man spots motorbike ...

Cambodia Bans Internet Cafes Near Schools

To agree with this circular would be go against the freedom of choice and freedom of choice should be everyone's right to practice it freely. I really do not agree that closing all internet cafe's in school area's will have any effect on where kids will go to get their internet fix. Student's will choose to do what they do when they want to. If they choose to risk their studies over some internet gaming and other things, then that's they choice they have to deal with when they get older and realize that what they did was not worth it. This is something that a Dictator would instill to prevent those who choose to use the internet for freedom of information. The internet is a vast world filled with information and learning material. To take away that would be only taking away from those who choose to use the internet for the right reason. I say that these bans are unnecessary and uncalled for. This should be given to the people to vote and not some government organi...

Hello and Smart merge to bring stable internet service for Smart customers

Hello and Smart merging sounds like a great thing. I use Smart for phone service and I can tell you that Smart Mobile has some of the best deals. But like anything else, nothing is always what you want it to be and their are some problems with Smart when it comes to their internet service. First off, using smart for internet has become a pain in the butt. What I mean by that is during certain times of the day, your service can be interrupted leaving you with out internet for for some time before the service allows you to re-connect. This can be frustrating when  working on some important work online or just surfing the web. When the service is working though, the speeds are ok. Youtube and streaming a movie online can be possible without buffering and that's a good thing. But like I said, Smart has it's problems when it comes to their internet service and I hope this can be fixed with this merge with Hello. So even with their interrupted service, Smart, like I said has some ...

What Battambang needs.

Living in Battambang for the past year, I have not went without my times of distress. i mean everyday is an experience with in it self and at random times, thing's can happen. Some for the good, some for the worst. It's really random and that's what I like about this place. When I first moved to Battambang, it was a real culture shock for me. I mean I really had no clue what Cambodia was like or what could happen while I was here.  Even being born in Srok Khmer, being raised in California, U.S. most my life made me forget most of my heritage. The closes thing I had to my forgotten  heritage was still being able to speak the language,  if any good at that. So yes, that's how much shock I talk about when I mention (CULTURE SHOCK!)

Ground broken on new mall in Phnom Penh | Business

Speaking for myself, there are many things I would like to find here in Cambodia at the moment. Whether it's entertainment or a need of some sort, seeing foreign investment's in this country is a plus for those hoping to see brand name clothing and electronics here for a much cheaper price. But only time will tell. Ground broken on new mall in Phnom Penh | Business

Police Blotter: 11 Dec 2012

Shooting off mouth fails, so drunk reaches for gun Hiding his gun after the fact didn’t keep a Pursat man out of cuffs on Friday. Police in Veal Veng district said the 20-year-old had gotten into a drunken argument with a neighbour and, his debate skills failing him, produced a pistol, which he fired into the air. Knowing the cops were on the way, he hid the gun, only to melt under questioning and show them where he’d hid it. Before being sent to court, police said, he explained that he had “found” the gun in Phnom Penh. Nokorwat Stick-wielding farmer beats fruit thief to a pulp A seemingly disproportionate response left a teen fruit thief seriously injured on Saturday. The 16-year-old had climbed a palm tree and was picking the fruit when the tree’s owner, a farmer, materialised with a wooden stick in hand. Furious, the farmer bashed the teen on the legs and waist until hospitalisation was required. The parents filed a complaint with police and the farmer has been arrest...

PM urges North Korea to call off rocket launch | National news

The world seems to have so much money to throw away for unnecessary reasons. Like missiles and chemical weapons that could destroy mass groups of civilization. No wonder most people think the world is going to end in some atomic explosion. Get it right world leaders. We need more food and better economy so think about that. Yazaki Corporation to launch Koh Kong plant | Business

Of course this benefits the corporation but does this also benefit the people. Will those who work for this company get good wages? Only time will tell but it looks like those who invest in Cambodia look only to the cheap labor and being able to use those who are looking for jobs to the maximum of  their ability. On the positive note, this does give many that are jobless jobs to support their families and so forth. Yazaki Corporation to launch Koh Kong plant | Business

Cambodia Remains Amid Twenty Worst Corrupt Countries

Some might think that Cambodia is moving in the right direction but that doesn't mean this place is not corrupt. Cambodia really needs to work on it's economic structure. Cambodia also needs to work on police corruption. This seems to be a big problem here in Cambodia. Bribing police officers here is as easy as giving a little kid candy and I really can't blame them since their pay is so dirt cheap that most have to look for dishonest work to support their families. But even with all this political corruption going on, one can still find enjoyment while visiting this country. There's many things to do and many sites to see. Police Blotter: 5 Dec 2012

Brutal honesty turns into plain old brutality A boss looking to share a friendly drink with the workers on his Pailin plantation got more than he bargained for on Thursday when loosened tongues began wagging about pay. Police said that after a few rounds, employees felt bold enough to ask for some money up front. After being denied, one of the workers left in a rage, only to return with a cleaver, which he used to hack his boss’s arms and legs. Police are now on the hunt for the 24-year-old farmhand and the victim is recuperating in hospital. Koh Santepheap Policemen rammed by overloaded beer truck A pair of police officers on motorbikes suffered serious injuries last week when an overloaded beer truck careered into their path in Kampong Chhnang’s Rolea Ba’ier district. One of the two has since been moved from a provincial hospital to Phnom Penh because of the severity of his injuries. The driver fled the scene, and the truck has been impounded by police. Three arrested and 10 rescued in hair salon bust | National news

With the local authorities making all these bust, you would think that some of those who are doing things like this would slow down. But then again, this is Cambodia where sometimes, life just never seems to be normal. Hopefully, these women wanted to be rescued and wasn't there on their own will. But who knows, I've been here over a year and I find many things still hard to comprehend. Three arrested and 10 rescued in hair salon bust | National news

Two Cambodians killed by Thai troops | National news

Those who choose to break the law and get caught should be dealt with with the law. Yes, cutting down trees is a big issue here in Cambodia and many try to get rich quick by getting into this trade, even going as far as crossing borders and many other things. But this should not give soldiers on either side reason to gun someone down unless the the person was armed. But yet again, this is Cambodia where things like this is a big problem and it doesn't seem like it's going away anytime soon. What really gets me though is even when people know that illegal logging can get them into lots of trouble including death, they continue to do it. Illegal logging can be called the blood money of Cambodia, and for those that are pursuing this trade should really take into consideration that this trade should not be more important than their lives. [Battambang-Connect] BTB Thursday Movie Night - "Crazy Heart"

A worn-down country singer and a burgeoning journalist form an unusual bond in this drama adapted from the novel by Thomas Cobb. His spirit broken by multiple failed marriages, too much time on the road, and too many nights with the bottle, Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) had started to feel like he was headed down the path of no return. When probing young writer Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal) digs deep enough to unearth the broken man behind the legend, however, Bad realizes that redemption may not be such a long shot after all. Robert Duvall and Colin Farrell co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi 112 minutes in English Critics say... "The movie belongs entirely to Bridges, who won the Golden Globe [and Academy Award] for best actor in a drama. His inimitable Jeff-isms have never been more endearing - the sloppy gait, the whiskey glass balanced on his chest, his general air of discombobulation." - Newsday "Filled with great music and an especially terrific performance f...

Water Festival brings tourist surge in provinces | Business

Since the cancellation of one of Cambodia's known festival, many have traveled to the beach to enjoy some water excitement and more with their families and friends. Usually, this time of year, many travel to different places like Phnom Penh, Siem Reip, and Battambang to check out the boat races but since the passing of the late King, boat racing was cancelled and many had to find other sources of entertainment. Police Blotter: 30 Nov 2012

Drinking buddies become moto thieves Four teenagers were arrested on Wednesday after they and three other men allegedly stole a motorbike from four men in Kandal’s Takhmao town. Police said that the suspects shared a drink with their victims on Tuesday and then followed them home. The four were less happy to see them the second time, especially when the youngsters attacked them with rocks and wooden sticks and left them bike-less. The victims reported the theft to police, who are searching for the three attackers still on the run. Villagers bemoan scant information on dam project | National news

I think these people have a right to be worried after all the unjust things that's been happening here in Cambodia. Meth dealers smoked out by police | National news

Another large scale drug bust. Just reading what the police confiscated from this guy lets us know that he was probably one of the top dogs in the drug scene. It is good that police are cracking down on drug dealers because if many of you have paid any attention to the younger generation, you will see that alot of them have turned to doing the same thing this guy was busted for to make money. Hopefully this sends a message to those but I really doubt it. Meth dealers smoked out by police | National news

Cambodian ex-king Norodom Sihanouk to be cremated on Feb 4

Kings, Queens, and politics was really never my thing. Many younger Khmer's seem to respect this man and others that fled the country during the Khmer Rouge times hate him. Either way, a person will either be remembered for the good he did or the bad he did. Feb. 4th is still a long way off and all I'm wondering is how they kept his body preserved for this long? Police Blotter: 23 Nov 2012

Kiddie robbery should have been child’s play It was like taking candy from a baby or, more precisely, a necklace from a 4-year-old. The crime took place on Wednesday when an apparently conscience-free 20-something approached the young victim as he was using a swing set in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district. Police said the tike, enjoying a relaxing afternoon with dad, had been left momentarily unattended when the cad in question came up and talked him out of his jewellery. Thankfully, pops looked up in time to see the transaction go down and immediately called for help. The callous crim was quickly collared and is now awaiting court. CPI: cost of living falls slightly | Business

From what I have seen these days in Cambodia, there are still large amounts of people who find it hard to support their families. It seems like prices are going up but work pay is staying the same. Its a sad thing when work is hard to find and when you do find one, they want to work you odd hours and give you the minimum. I guess this is the way of Srok Khmer where the ones doing good and have money enslave the poor suppressing them. With money hard to make here, hearing that the cost of living being down is a good thing. Hopefully the trend continues to go this way but only time will tell. Sound off in the comments section if you have a opinion. CPI: cost of living falls slightly | Business

This Thursday at the HUBB...BEAU TRAVAIL

his Thursday at the HUBB... BEAU TRAVAIL Beau Travail ("Good Work") is a 1999 French movie directed by Claire Denis that is loosely based on Herman Melville's novella Billy Budd . She has set the movie in Djibouti, where the protagonists are soldiers in the French Foreign Legion. Parts of the soundtrack of the movie are from Benjamin Britten's opera based on the novella.  Topped the Village Voice's Best Film list in 2002. 92 minutes in French with English Subtitles critics say... The film is "so tactile in its cinematography, inventive in its camera placement, and sensuous in its editing that the purposefully oblique and languid narrative is all but eclipsed." - J. Ticket to ride is denied after owner spots thief A 30-year-old man, armed with a stolen ticket stub and keys, thought he could sashay past security guards with another man’s moto on Saturday in the capital’s Russey Keo district, but his methods proved ineffective against the bike’s vigilant owner. It’s a bird, it’s a plane – no, it’s a tuk-tuk driver A quick-thinking tuk-tuk driver turned the tables on a pair of would-be bag snatchers in the wee hours of Monday morning, ending their shenanigans by using his own vehicle as a battering ram. The two villains, 18 and 19, made their move after the driver had picked up a pair of foreign fares at Phnom Penh International Airport. When the teens made their move, the female passenger resisted, giving our tuk-tuk hero the chance to turn his vehicle into the thugs and send them tumbling to the ground. AJAMI (2009) Palestinian Scandar Copti and Israeli Yaron Shani collaborated on this independent drama, which examines how the troubled relationship between their countries colors everyday life in the Middle East.  It follows the stories of a number of Palestinians and the conflicts they encounter living in the Ajami neighborhood of Jaffa, near Tel Aviv.  Ajami won a special distinction award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for best foreign film at the 2009 Academy Awards. 120 minutes In Arabic and some Hebrew with English subtitles Critics say... "The performances are searingly intense, all delivered by non-professionals cast to type and extemporizing within the parameters of the script. They take the play out of acting, and the effect is unvarnished realism." - Globe and Mail "... acutely insightful about the social divisions within Israel, but it examines them without scolding or sentimentality." - seanax.c...

US lawmakers slam Cambodia's Prime Minister

A dozen senior US lawmakers have sent a damning indictment of Prime Minister Hun Sen to newly re-elected President Barack Obama, accusing the Cambodian premier of links to high-profile cases of illegal logging and a raft of human-rights abuses. The highly provocative and thinly sourced letter, signed by five senators and seven members of Congress, urges Obama to speak out against rights abuses – including a killing it alleges is connected to a firm with links to Hun Sen – during his upcoming visit to Cambodia for the ASEAN Summit .

Clean sweep for ASEAN | National news

Cleaning for th ASEAN is always good. But this is something that should be looked at in the first place. I do understand that Cambodia is recovering from a violent history but I also feel that more help should be given to those kids roaming the streets. Tourists triumph over couple of camera thiefs Two robbers in Phnom Penh picked the wrong tourists to mess with on Tuesday. Cambodians Somberly Mark Independence Day

PHNOM PENH - Hundreds of people gathered at Independence Monument in Phnom Penh on Friday to celebrate the 59th anniversary of Cambodia’s independence from France. King Norodom Sihamoni, still in mourning at the death of his father, Norodom Sihanouk, did not attend the ceremony. Sihanouk is widely credited with bringing Cambodia through its independence without violence. He died in Beijing Oct. 15, and his body is now lying in state at the Royal Palace. The death of the former king, widely revered in the country, cast a somber mood on the celebration. The ceremony was presided over by National Assembly President Heng Samrin, at Independence Monument in the capital. Prime Minister Hun Sen did not attend the ceremony, which included the lighting of a “victory flame” at the base of the monument that will burn for the next three days. Marn Dollar, a 22-year-old student of agriculture, said the ceremony was a day of sadness for him, due to the death of Sihanouk. “I to...

In these unique, fun-filled, water-based exercise classes, we will combine regular fitness moves with qigong (chikung), tai qi (tai chi), yoga,  watsu (water shiatsu) and play.  Exercise in a pool uses buoyancy (weight off joints), hydrostatic pressure (strengthens breathing, helps remove lactic acid from cells and delivers it to the liver, thus reducing after exercise soreness) and resistance of the water itself( this is like using weights for strength training).   The beautiful pool at Battambang Resort is salt-water.... even more buoyant and so much better for the skin!!!   The instructor, Canadian Doreen Bakstad, brings to the classes not only a love of being in water, but also 30 years of experience in health and wellness. Directory for Battambang Area

Hello folks! I am currently in the process of working on a directory for the Battambang area. This directory will be something simple consisting of business name , business type and phone numbers. So if you like for me to list you in the directory, please email me the required information so I can get this started. M'lop dtra-jay-uk In Battambang

M'lop Dtra-jay-uk translated (cool shade) in Battambang is a local hotspot for the locals that are spending time with family or just hanging out with friends to enjoy cold beer and food. I can see why this place is named this way because when you enter, the whole place is covered in shade with straw huts about 2 Ft off the ground where you can enjoy your food and drink. They also have a few huts sitting along the river giving you a view of those passing by on their boats to tend to their daily business. I have been here twice and both times, this place was really busy. Of course since this is Khmer owned, the majority of the food here is also and for a little over $10, me and 3 others were able to enjoy several great Khmer dishes and 2 pitchers of beer.  Great deal! you say? Well of course! So if your guys are out to try something a little different, then I really suggest this place. This spot is one of my favorites.  The only thing that thi...

For Sale - Battambang BuzZ Guide.

Battambang BuzZ guide was first published in April 2010. Since then it has become very popular with tourists as an interesting informative resource  and local businesses as a vehicle to advertise in. Battambang BuzZ is published every six months. An A3 pocket fold-out map is also published every six months. ( meaning there is a new publication of one sort every three months throughout a twelve month period ). Obviously interested parties would have to be in Cambodia long term to run the advertising sales which fund the publication. Battambang BuzZ is noted in the new 2012 edition of Lonely Planet as recommended reading. Sale would also include the control of battambangbuzz.blogspot.com Interested parties should call 012 870993                     Thanks Kevin Bolton

The panicked plunderer injured himself jumping to the ground and was unable to hobble away from arrest. Kampuchea Thmey Cops teach criminal mentor valuable lesson FOLLOWING a several-hour chase, police finally caught an alleged criminal-of-all-trades on Saturday. Phsar Thmey In Battambang

Phsar Thmey is one of the many supermarkets located in Battambang Cambodia. This like all the other markets are center shopping centers selling anything from fresh fish, meats, and vegetables. The best time to shop for your food is in the morning when everything seems fresh. Now for some that have never been to a country like Cambodia and think that this place is going to be some nice clean super market might be intimidated to know that it's not that at all. The markets here are a little unsanitary and the fish and meat are just layed out on tables or even on the ground. There is no freezers or packaged meat. If you are a small size person, then finding clothes that fit is not a problem for you here. Unfortunately for me since I'm a little bigger, clothes are a task to find if not impossible. Hopefully one day, I will be able to find a place where I can shop for clothes at ease. Also in these markets, there are plenty of money changers and gold booths for those that want ...
